Tapestry is a textile art involving weaving-coloured threads to create designs. It’s used decoratively, woven directly into fabric using a loom. Students will learn weaving techniques, colour blending, pattern creation, and texture variation. Tapestry showcases detailed designs with precise thread control, allowing for rich colours and textures. The course includes hands-on workshops to explore tapestry’s principles and create fabric art.

Workshop Objectives

  • Introduce students to the art and history of tapestry weaving.
  • Learn the fundamentals of tapestry weaving, from warping a loom to finishing a woven piece.
  • Explore a variety of tapestry techniques and textures.
  • Design and complete a unique handwoven wall hanging to take home.

Workshop Schedule

Mondays: 9, 16, 23 & 30 August
Time: 10:30 am – 12:30 pm

Session 1 – Getting Started

  • Introduction to tapestry weaving and its history
  • Overview of tools, materials and loom setup
  • Warping the loom
  • Learning the plain weave technique
  • Beginning your tapestry

Session 2 – Building Skills

  • Review of basic techniques
  • Learning Soumak (wrap) weaving
  • Exploring colour changes and shaping
  • Continuing your tapestry project

Session 3 – Adding Texture

  • Learning Rya knots (fringe)
  • Creating texture and decorative effects
  • Developing your own design
  • Continuing to build and refine your tapestry

Session 4 – Finishing Your Tapestry

  • Completing your woven artwork
  • Finishing techniques and securing the weave
  • Removing the tapestry from the loom
  • Preparing your piece for hanging
  • Group sharing and celebration of finished projects

What You'll Take Home

By the end of the four-week series, you'll have the confidence to continue tapestry weaving at home and a beautiful handmade wall hanging created using a range of traditional tapestry techniques.

Free Domestic Shipping for orders of $99 +

  • This option is only available for purchases of $99.00 or more.
  • Delivery will be made via either via Sendle OR Australia Post standard Parcel Post (relevant Tracking details will be provided as soon as your order is processed). Generally, deliveries to metro areas and major regional centres will be sent via Sendle and deliveries to rural and regional addresses will go via Australia Post.
  • This offer is only valid to physical addresses within Australia, as Sendle couriers cannot deliver to Australia Post owned properties, this includes: post offices, PO boxes, locked bags, parcel lockers or Australia Post parcel collect locations.  If you specifically require shipping to a PO Box or similar, you will need to select a shipping option offered by Australia Post. 
  • If your shipment is sent via Sendle, your parcel will automatically be marked with "Authority to leave", unless you specify otherwise.  If you do not wish for your parcel to be left when a receiver is not home to sign for it, please let us know and it will be delivered to a nearby location for collection.  Collection points include convenient local businesses such as newsagents and service stations.
