Designed by Melbourne creative and 'history boy', Brady Michaels, this tea towel depicts the city of Melbourne on 1894. During the Victorian Gold Rush of the 1850s & '60s, "Marvellous Melbourne" was amongst the grandest cities in the world, rapidly expanding and investing heavily in infrastructure. By 1894 the boom was well and truly over, but many familiar areas were already established: Hawthorn, Flemington, Carlton, Fitzroy, Northcote, Brunswick, Coburg, Preston, Heidelberg, Williamstown, Windsor, St Kilda, Brighton are all recognsable on this map. Look out for Sandridge, the literal sand ridge that was excavated to create the city's Turning Basin, where the mouth of the Yarra River meets Port Philip Bay.
